Newly Elected Officials

The Illinois Association of County Board Members provides training to newly elected Commissioners after they take the oath of office. The Institute for Excellence in County Governance is a structured education program designed to help you learn more about your new position in county government. The sessions provide new county board members with an overview of the complex issues they will face as county officials.

Basic instruction includes:
• County government roles and responsibilities
• Financial management and budget basics
• Legal issues including Open Meetings Act and Ethics
• Understanding the State legislative process
• Who’s who in the courthouse
• Risk management

The sessions provide new county board members with an overview of the complex issues they will face as county officials. You will meet other elected officials, hear from state officials with whom you will be working, and become acquainted with the services and resources your association offers you.

The Institute for Excellence in County Governance is conducted in partnership with the University of Illinois Extension. Newly elected officials must be enrolled in the Certified County Officials (CCO) program to be eligible for training.

Information and registration materials will be available
